Irrigation Training for Blueberry and Hothouse Producers
19 February 2015
North Coast Local Land Services and Coffs Harbour Regional Landcare are offering Irrigation Management Training for blueberry and hothouse producers at a subsidised registration fee.
With the current wet weather being experienced across the North Coast it may seem odd to think about irrigation but for North Coast blueberry and hothouse growers who experienced irrigation issues during the very dry periods in 2013 and 2014, now is the time to learn the science of irrigation.
The Irrigation Management Training will provide the skills needed for growers who would like to fine tune their irrigation for maximum fruit yield without excess run off and have a better understanding of their water usage. The two day course will feature practical, on-farm sessions on understanding soils and measuring irrigation efficiency from drip irrigation systems.
Topics that will be covered include: Soil water principles, saturation, field capacity, refill point and readily available water, root zone depth and an introduction to irrigation benchmarking – determining how much water is being applied annually and levels of irrigation efficiency and drip system performance.
Representatives from North Coast Local Land Services will be available for advice and expert speakers will include irrigation expert, Jeremy Giddings from NSW Department of Primary Industries, who will discuss how to achieve a 95% even distribution of water across the plantation for maximum production.
The training will commence on 25 March and conclude on 1 April. Both days commence at 9.15 am and finish at 3.00 pm with lunch provided. It will be held at the Woolgoolga Bowling Club (CeX) and include field trips to local farms. The 50% subsidy being offered reduces the cost of participating to $530 per person.
If you are a blueberry or hothouse producer and would like to be involved in the training, please register your interest with Coffs Harbour Landcare on 6651 1308.
